Things You Will Need

  1. Base coat and top coat polish
  2. Your choice of pastel-colored nail polishes
  3. Black or dark-colored nail polish
  4. Nail file
  5. Toothbrush or paintbrush for splattering affects

Step one: Create the Easter egg shape

Use a nail file to shape your nails into an oval. File the corners of the nail to create a rounded shape. The oval shape will create the perfect Easter egg look. File your nails in one direction to prevent damage to the free edge. This technique will prevent your nails from tearing or breaking because of weakness.

Step two: Apply the base coat

Apply a clear base coat to each nail. The base coat protects your nail bed. It also gives the surface a strong, smooth canvas that will allow the polish to evenly cover the nail.

Step three: Apply Easter egg colors

Apply your choice of pastel polishes to the nails. To resemble the Easter egg candies, apply a different color to each nail. Pastel colors range from blues, purples, pinks, yellows, and greens. Any light and airy color will work perfectly for this look. Apply two coats of polish to each nail. Sometimes, pastel colors will need multiple coats for the color to stand out.

Step four: Splatter your eggs

Set up an area to make a mess! Lie out a paper towel to place under your hand on to protect the surface you are using.  Get another paper towel to cover the top of your hand. Dip the toothbrush bristles into black or a dark-colored nail polish and gently splatter each nail. This technique creates the splattered Easter egg candy look. Use nail polish remover and a Q-tip to clean the excess paint off of your skin.

step five: Apply the top coat (clear or matte)

After the nail polish has dried completely, apply a clear top coat to each nail. You can use a matte top coat to create the textured finish of an egg. The top coat protects the polish, preventing it from chipping and providing longer wear time. Let your nails dry completely before doing anything with your hands to prevent damage to your design.

Your Easter egg design is complete. This look is perfect for beginners and can be a great conversation starter. You can add your own personal touch by creating patterns with the colors and textures. You can use as many or as few colors for the base of each nail, and also use different colored splatters. Don’t be afraid to get messy and have fun with this technique. Show off your Creative Design on your Easter weekend as you’re hunting for eggs with the real candy inside.
